For his latest creation, Christophe Rauck is staging two plays by Swedish writer Jonas Hassen Khemiri in a traverse stage setup. Presented as a diptych, ≈ [Presque égal à] (Almost Equal To) and J’appelle mes frères (I’ll Call My Brothers) expose the power of money and the fear of the other in Western societies.
In ≈ [Presque égal à], money rules. Society is a machine that excludes and dehumanises, where profitability, gain and productivity are the new idols. In this cold world, four characters cross paths: Martina dreams of leaving, Mani wants to overthrow the system, Andrei clings to survival and Freja, who has just been laid off, yearns for revenge. Caught in the trap of consumer society, the more they try to move, the deeper they sink. What price human dignity in a world dominated by the market? Can we hope for a better life without betraying our convictions?
In J’appelle mes frères, a car bomb — probably a terrorist attack — sends a wave of panic through the city. As fear and suspicion set in, Amor wanders the streets, his appearance making him feel watched and hunted. He calls his “brothers” — Shavi, Valeria, Ahlem and Tyra — to warn them to “hide” and “blend in with the crowd!” In the prevailing paranoia, he even begins to doubt his innocence. Can you remain yourself when you unwittingly become a threat? Who might be guilty? Them? Me? Us?
Shattering conventions and exploding stereotypes, Khemiri’s writing becomes a joyous act of liberation, brimming with biting comedy and political satire. Inspired by stand-up comedy, he invents a vibrant, free and impactful language that directly addresses the audience. Skillfully playing with words and linguistic styles, his theatre transforms language — a mirror of inequalities — into a powerful tool for resistance and self-assertion.
