What if Flaubert’s scandalous lover was simply a free woman ?
Trapped in a marriage with a dreary provincial doctor, Emma Bovary dreams of breaking free from her husband’s dull existence, which is far from the whirl of social engagements she had imagined when she married him. To escape her monotonous existence, she has a series of fleeting affairs, choosing social scandal over the quiet agony of solitude. In an interplay of intimacy and heartbreak, as lyrical as it is dramatic, the Catalan director Carme Portaceli challenges us to reassess the motivations of this tragic heroine. Frequently dismissed as a frivolous romantic, she recasts her as an icon of feminine liberation. For the Catalan director, Emma is a rebel and an activist ; not a hapless victim of tragedy but a brazen architect of her own catastrophic destiny. With unwavering resolve, she defies the mundane and relentlessly pursues her ultimate desire : to experience the pinnacle of love and embrace her true self in unfettered freedom.
