After Bovary, Carme Portaceli turns her attention to Anna Karenina, a modern heroine hounded by a society that is ill-equipped to judge her.
Those who lead happy lives have few stories to tell. Tolstoy’s Anna Karenina delves into the complexities of an illicit romance that begins with a journey to Moscow. Hoping to salvage her unfaithful brother’s crumbling marriage, Anna Karenina embarks on a trip that takes an unexpected turn when she encounters a spirited officer named Vronsky. Defying social convention, she leaves her husband and child to pursue her passion and cuts her ties with a hypocritical aristocracy, but in doing so, brings about her own downfall. After Jane Eyre, Emma Bovary and Mrs Dalloway, Carme Portaceli takes a fresh look at the tragic fate of a woman ostracised and shamed by society for having dared to do what they never could. Anna and her fellow characters take the stage, each revealing their personal narratives and emotional journeys and the tragic reason behind one woman’s fateful decision to take her own life. Through the voices of these women, Portaceli channels her unwavering rage while nurturing the dream of a world where their happiness can blossom.
