Show created on March 2021 at Nanterre-Amandiers, centre dramatique national

There are artists who like to push forward and beyond their chosen medium. Elvire Caillon and Léonard Martin fit the description. The two visual artists do not keep within the usual confines of the visual arts, expanding their scope of creativity. Like Anne Imhof, William Kentridge, Théo Mercier, and many more, they are pursuing new avenues in the field of performing arts.

For their first collaborative piece – seeking the ever-evolving work – the duo draws upon bunraku, a theater form featuring large size puppets manipulated in view of the audience invented in Japan in the 17th century. Entitled Tempura Cockpit, the show becomes a kind of plastic matrix similar to a cockpit: a place full of ladders, trapdoors, windows and catwalks where music, objects, images, words and feelings collected on a trip to Japan cross-fertilize.

Like Tempura – a deep-fried dish – an improbable interweaving of western and eastern cultures that Roland Barthes was partial to and described as an “empty sign” in a long and beautiful text, Tempura Cockpit is still in flux as we write this. It will be by turns a show and an installation but always retain the very pictorial and sculptural qualities of a work in which plasticity is a significant criterion.
