Sigrun, a once-famous artist, asks her niece Makena, the director of a successful theatre, to help revive her career. This dynamic sets the stage for Norwegian duo Goksøyr & Martens to explore questions of loyalty, intergenerational bonds and artistic freedom within an intimate, closed setting.
What do we mean to each other? Are we indebted to those who raised us?
Sigrun, whose career has stalled, hopes to stage her next work at the well-known theatre directed by Makena, to whom she was once a mother figure. But Makena has no recollection of agreeing to her request. Unspoken words give way to subtle hints, their roles reverse, and tension mounts between the two women. As Sigrun’s plans come to light, another question arises: is it acceptable, for the sake of art, to lay bare the private lives of family and friends? When a story is shared, who has the right to tell it?
Toril Goksøyr and Camilla Martens, the directors behind MomA, deliver a gripping family drama in this final instalment in their “Livet” (Norwegian for “life”) pentalogy. Each of these five plays explores a key stage in our existence — from birth to death — blending documentary theatre, visual art and sound installation. Audiences at MomA are equipped with headphones, helping to blur the line between them and the stage. Each breath, each moment of silence, is directly felt, drawing us closer to the emotions of the characters in an unsettling sensory experience that implicitly questions the boundaries between art and life.
