This short early work by Swiss writer Robert Walser explores doubt, befuddlement, desire, and incestuous relationships. Gisèle Vienne tackles these themes to bring out the flaws of human emotions from which conflicting feelings arise.
Gisèle Vienne is an artist that isn’t afraid to straddle lines, genres and mediums. With L’Etang, she takes us into the world of Robert Walser in whose introspective writing the infinitely small sparks barely perceptible seismic tremors. In the work of the Swiss author, the family is seen as a force of domination and submission that sadly reflects the neoliberal society we now live in. Walser can’t put up with it. His writing strives to subvert and warp this law by turning power games on their head. A key aspect of Vienne’s work addresses the violence of the cultural construction of the body. Let the body and emotions speak, think of the body as a subversive element averse to authority. Adolescence is the time and space for this fight against social urgings. Bodies, however hurt or subservient, feel this ability to free themselves and exist as they are. A show for two actresses, Adèle Haenel and Ruth Vega Fernandez, L’Etang inflames passions and emotions through plays of voices, bodies and light. Here children are watching us.
Les œuvres de Gisèle Vienne condensent des désirs antagonistes, dans une recherche radicale de la beauté, prise entre idéal de perfection et fantasmes de destruction. Chorégraphe et marionnettiste, metteuse en scène et plasticienne, elle élabore des visions dérangeantes qui s’abîment dans une fascination pour ce qui, dans la mort, brûle de vie. Formée à la musique, la philosophie et à l’École supérieure nationale des arts de la marionnette, elle peuple son œuvre protéiforme de figures anthropomorphes – marionnettes et mannequins, masques et poupées — de danseurs et comédiens, chez lesquels elle traque différentes qualités de présence. Son travail est tissé de compagnonnages, notamment avec les écrivains Dennis Cooper et Catherine Robbe-Grillet, les musiciens Peter Rehberg et Stephen O’Malley et l’éclairagiste Patrick Riou. Gisèle Vienne est artiste associée au Théâtre national de Bretagne à Rennes et à Nanterre-Amandiers. Elle y a présenté This is How You Will Disappear et The Ventriloquists Convention en 2015, ainsi que Crowd en 2017 et 2019.
