Once upon a time there was a little girl who was bored at home by herself. Her mother was very busy and didn’t want her to go out alone. But the little girl finally left home to visit her grandmother who lived on the other side of the woods. Let’s go for a walk in the woods while the wolf is not there. But in this story, the wolf is actually there, looking out at the edge of the woods.

Little Red Riding Hood, which premiered in 2004, is the first show for young audiences by Joël Pommerat. The show has toured extensively around France and abroad. Everyone knows the story of Little Red Riding Hood, a classic of children’s literature.
Pommerat’s adaptation elevates Charles Perrault’s version, propelling it into our modern world without the affectations of that world. That is, while everything seems to have changed, childhood fears – the dark, silence, unfamiliar things – are still relevant. These are ancient fears built into an unchanging ritual, a milestone that helps children grow up and go out into the world. However scared children can be, they are reckless. In fact, people say they love to scare one another. Fear may have crossed over to the other side. Perhaps parents project all their fears, those of their childhood, those of the present time and that of an uncertain future onto their offspring. This Little Red Riding Hood is a theatrical adventure that transcends the tale, a poetic adventure centered on the plays of light and the magical sounds that bring out the actors’ performances.
