When Ambre Kahan decided to read Goliarda Sapienza’s book, she did so in one sitting, almost without blinking an eye. She then set about meeting the challenge of staging L’Art de la joie, a saga that spans the 20th century, in which Modesta, a wife, mother, lover, and friend passionate about freedom pushes life – her life – to the limits, with panache and joy. Rather than adapt the novel in its entirety, Ambre Kahan kept the turmoil, disarray, and exuberance that flow from the narrative without simplifying it, and let the noise and fury burst forth. Thirteen performers accompany Modesta, a woman who embraces others as much as she embraces life. The show will be performed in two parts: the first this season and the full version in spring 2025.
Ambre Kahan trained as a musician before gaining her first theatrical experience with Anatoli Vassiliev in Thérèse Philosophe in 2007, alongside Valérie Dréville and Stanislas Nordey. She then joined the École du Théâtre National de Bretagne. Get Out Of My Garden is her first production, created in 2011 as part of the TNB’s “cartes blanches” series, based on the poetic texts of Tarkos and the songs of Dalida.
She directed Garden Party, un Sujet à Vif at the 2013 Festival d’Avignon, and then created All By My Self (ou l’histoire d’une rencontre) with the collective La Sixième Heure based on the same principle of on-stage writing. Since 2016 she has been directing Ivres Feu sacré by David Lescot at the Théâtre de la Croix-Rousse in 2022.
La Compagnie Get Out has teamed up with La Comédie de Valence and Théâtre des Célestins for the 23/24 season.
